There are 2 main types of filters that are used in residential and commercial in-ground swimming pools - Sand Filters and Diatomaceous Earth Filters
Sand or Media filters are the most commonly used pool filters in swimming pools. They are easy to clean and will last for up to 7 years if treated well.
To clean the filter all you need to do is backwash the filter for a few minutes and then perform a rinse operation and your filter will be clean.
Once a sand filter has been in operation for 7 years, the media or filter will need to be replaced, in order to maintain the performance of your filter.

Cartridge Filters are made of a special paper like filter element similar to one you might find in your car. The water is forced through it removing debris and leaving your water clean and sparkly. Cost wise they require less upfront investment when compared to a sand or media filter.
Generally speaking a cartridge filter can filter out smaller particles than a media filter but does have some drawbacks. Cleaning can be messy having to hose out the cartridge element regularly, which can mean sometimes getting a little wet in the process. Another drawback can be that the elements don’t last for long periods, only lasting 1-2 years before needing replacing.
Cartridge filters however have a very small foot print an can fit in smaller areas condensing the total pool equipment foot print.
